Dr. (Ms.) Sudarshini Fernandopulle, Chairperson of the Indian Women Parliamentarians Caucus, recently (August 8) presented a study on the gender wage gap to the Indian Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana and the Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa.
The report was prepared by researchers including the Alliance on Women and Media, led by the Women Parliamentarians Caucus.
The event was also attended by Dr. Harsha de Silva, Chairman, Public Finance Committee, Ms. Rohini Kumari Wijerathna, MP, Co-Vice Chairman, Women Parliamentarians Caucus, Ms. Eran Wickramaratne, MP.
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abewardena told the meeting that it was important to enact legislation and new policies to change these wage inequalities. In addition, the Leader of the Opposition said that provisions should be included in the Constitution so that these rights can be upheld.
The core group chairperson pointed out that in order to eliminate the gender wage gap, the attitudes of people in society should also change.
Ms. Kushani Rohanadeera, Secretary General of Parliament and Secretary of the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus, thanked all those who contributed to the success of this exercise.
Commenting on the study, the research team led by Dr Sepali Kotgoda, Executive Director of the Women and Media Alliance, said the gender wage gap in Sri Lanka’s labour market is mainly closely linked to unpaid care services.
The researchers stressed that women are underrepresented in high-paying industries, concentrated in low-paying service jobs, and a significant number of women are engaged in part-time work and unpaid domestic work.
The event was attended by invitees including the Ministry of Women, Child Affairs and Social Empowerment, Women and Media Federation, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), National Democratic Institute (NDI) and others.
