Ruth Waller’s mother changes statement about donations
Investigative Reporter | ZimEye | Gofundme campaign For one kidney patient, college graduate Ruth Hwara saw statements constantly being changed about who owns the more than $45,000 raised in the past two months.
exist Ruth’s mother spoke briefly with ZimEye on Saturday morning outside Avenues Clinic, where her daughter was While in hospital, she made several statements.
1. Due to financial problems, my daughter was not adequately taken care of.
2. Ruth was unable to fly to India for surgery because her swollen stomach needed drainage.
3. The funds raised have not been misappropriated.
4. Of the $45,000 (£37,000) raised on the Gofundme account, $20,000 has been withdrawn and deposited into the Zimbabwean account of her sister’s son, Felix Machingambi.Watch the video below)
5. Only two people were responsible for the money, Nigel Makono and Felix Machingambi (her sister’s son)
Reports are now that donations have exceeded $200,000, with $70,000 raised by a man named King Solomon and transferred in its entirety to the mother.
But later on Saturday evening, after revealing she had no relationship with Felix, Ruth’s mother changed her story, this time saying Felix had not received a penny.
At around 8pm, Felix made the following remarks during a live video discussion:
Ruth’s mother claimed that she gave the money to Felix… However, I recorded her confessing, “My son Yaya forced me to say this. You didn’t give me any money.” I asked her, “Mom, you gave me so much money, did I embezzle any of it?” She replied, “No, you didn’t embezzle a penny.”
I then asked the attending physicians why they allowed Ruth to fly in her condition. The video cuts out at that point and I asked my mom’s permission to post it. Afterwards, my brother suggested I leave, retreat, and get on the freeway to cool off. It was a traumatic experience. We stopped three times and I could tell from the looks and whispers that people were talking about us.
I said the truth will set me free and if there is anything I fear it is my reputation being damaged. I built my reputation from nothing and I realise there are people who enjoy seeing me in a bad light and even wish for my downfall. While I cannot stop them, they cannot stop God’s plan. I am just doing God’s work. If I have made mistakes I am sorry but to my fellow Zimbabweans I am afraid to help others now. If anyone needs help I am sorry but I am not willing to help now. I have my own life to live.
For those listening, go to TikTok where you can find all my videos. You will see the phone number in the ad. I have nothing to do with anybody’s money. I work from Sunday to Sunday, January to January, no days off. I can’t talk about other people’s money because I have nothing to do with it. If you see me there, the little money I have is enough for me. I don’t have any tips to give you. I record the smallest amount I get as well as the larger amounts and then post them. In the case of Ruth, when I hear money being discussed in the group, I record a thank you message for the feedback. That’s all I know. But whenever I record, I put the number as the person directly responsible for managing the money that people give.
King Solomon asked, “Felix, let me ask you, when this group was formed, did you hear about the issues discussed there?”
Felix replied: “We talked a lot. Some people sulked and withdrew. I’m not close to their family.”
King Solomon observed, “I noticed that you were very close to Yaya’s family.”
Felix clarified: “Let me explain, I am not that kind of person.”
King Solomon continued: “Felix, I want to ask you, when was the GoFundMe account created? And were you involved?”
Felix responded, “I didn’t take any money. The only thing I was involved in was making flyers and distributing them. I have nothing to do with the GoFundMe campaign. I have nothing to do with these people. What I did was build bridges, but I have no personal relationship with them.”
Tom Jones added: “Going forward, I really appreciate everything you do. But when you help people and see a GoFundMe going on, do you ever wonder who started it?”
Felix replied: “The suspects are Saroo and another man called Ndeyami.”
King Solomon said, “I have never seen Ruth’s mother. I would like to see her.”
Felix suggested, “Come over and meet her. I can pick you up tomorrow. I’ll text you the location and provide you with safe parking.”
Felix then asked, “Why did Ruth’s mom lie to the people who helped her?” I asked her, “Where is the money?” She responded, “I’m sorry, son, I did it because I didn’t want to be robbed.” I asked her again and she said the money was in the bank.
Ruth’s mother lied about being related to Felix, saying he was her sister’s son, which was not true. The bottom line is, these are public funds and need to be audited.
A live call to Ruth’s mother:
Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, Mom. How is Ruth now?
Mother: Ruth is fine.
Felix: I recorded you one time, Mom. I asked you about money. I asked you about money then. People ask me now why Mom lied and said she gave you money.
Mother: You didn’t receive the money.
Felo: So where is the rest of the money?
Mother: In the bank
Felix: So what about currencies that aren’t in the UK?
Mother: When I talk to you, I tell the truth.
Felix: How come when I was recording you, you said that part of the money came and part of the money stayed?
Mother: I didn’t say that.
Felix M: OK, Mom, I don’t want to talk to you. No one is forcing you. How are you feeling today?
Mother: I’m fine
Felix: Did you really give me gofundme money?
Mother: No, that’s not true, I told you, part of the money is in the bank.
Felix: So in order to get this money around so widely, you claim that you gave me the money.
Mother: When that happened, I was forced. I lied to her.
Felix: And you lied and said you were my relative.
The phone line is disconnected…
Felix: How much money did we raise?
Mother: There are 37,000.
Felix: Is that the Gofundme account?
Mother: Yes.
Felix: Who helps us with the gofundme?
Mother: They are Ruth’s friends.
Felix: Who are they?
Mother: There’s Nigel, and there’s Gamu.
Felix: Nigel, who is Sekourou (uncle) or Nigel (friend)?
Mother: Nigel Sekoru (uncle).
Felix: So how much have we used so far?
Mother: We’ve already spent $5,000.
Felix: So how much is left?
Mother: 32,000.
Felix: Okay.
Mother:
Felix: Okay mom, you can go to sleep now. But mom, I’ve been accused of stealing money.
Mother: No.
Felix: King Solomon was also accused.
Mother: No.
Felix: Okay, Mom, you can go and rest.
—Mobile phone disconnected—
KING SOLOMON: That makes no connection and no sense.
Unless there is funding from elsewhere, the numbers don’t add up.
ZimEye has confirmed that the so-called Nigel, an uncle said to be a friend of Ruth, is in fact the mother’s boyfriend, who is well known in the local community in Harare for his sudden wealth and establishment of a massive car sales company.
