Another Russian institution has lowered its forecast for the grain harvest this season. We are talking about the Russian Grain Union, reports Musavat.com. According to information provided by the chairman of the Union, Arkady Zlochevsky, the forecast for the grain harvest by the end of 2024 was lowered to 129 million tons due to frosts in May.
He said that all analysts have now lowered their forecasts: “According to expectations, we will be able to obtain an average total production of 129 million tons from the existing fields this season, assuming 25.8 centimeters per hectare are harvested. This is a very sharp drop, because earlier we had predicted the production of 142-147 million tons in these areas.
Even if all areas that need to be reseeded could be reseeded with late spring planting, yields would still be much lower than with fall planting, Zlochevsky said.
According to information provided by Zlochevsky to TASS, the average cost of replanting is about 20,000 rubles per hectare: “Imagine how much it would cost to replant 1 million hectares of land with 20,000 rubles. Whether it can be achieved is still unknown.”
Earlier, according to the results of the meeting of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture’s Operational Headquarters, the frost that occurred in May had a widespread impact on crops in 23 regions, and a state of emergency was implemented in 8 regions. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Patrushev called on all regions to organize reseeding as soon as possible to comply with agricultural technical deadlines and complete the planned field structure to the maximum extent possible.
Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut said some 900,000 hectares of land needed to be replanted because of the frost.
