Russia threatens with nuclear missiles and reminds of Doomsday Clock

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov threatened that Russia could deploy nuclear missiles, allegedly in response to Western activities. He said the experience of the war in Ukraine proved this. This was reported by the commentary portal with reference to Russian media reports.

Sergey Ryabkov, speaking on Russia 1, a Russian state television channel, pointed out the possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons.

“I confirm: if the Supreme Commander says that our military needs to equip such aircraft carriers with special ammunition, then I think they will have to make this decision based on a number of factors. It may be necessary one day,” Ryabkov said, adding that the upgrade scenarios could vary.

The Russian diplomat then referred to the Doomsday Clock, suggesting that Russia must be prepared for danger.

“I would say that the fact that this clock is now showing about two minutes does not mean that the advancement of the clock is irreversible and the Doomsday Clock will start ticking, but we need to be responsible about what is happening,” he added.

Sergey Ryabkov added that the war in Ukraine and US support allegedly forced Russia to change its military doctrine of nuclear deterrence.

Let’s recall that the Doomsday Clock is a mechanism created by scientists after World War II to assess the probability that humanity could face a global disaster or the end of the world. In 2024, scientists moved the clock forward 90 seconds to midnight, the closest indicator of the risk of a global disaster. The main reason for this decision was military conflicts, especially the war in Ukraine provoked by Russia.
