Moscow and Bamako agree to develop ties on energy infrastructure
Russian energy giant Rosatom announced on Wednesday that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Mali on cooperation in the development of nuclear energy and other key areas.
A Rosatom delegation travelled to the West African country this week to meet with transitional President Assimi Goita. The delegation was led by Rosatom deputy director general for international relations Nikolay Spassky and included Grigory Nazarov, head of JSC NovaWind, a subsidiary of the company specialising in wind power.
Spassky gave Goita a comprehensive briefing on the progress of major cooperation projects led by Rosatom in the country.
At the end of the visit, the two sides signed three memoranda of understanding. Mali’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources Bintou Camara signed an agreement on the development of nuclear infrastructure, and Minister of Higher Education Bouréma Kansaye signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in personnel training.
Russia also held talks with a Malian delegation led by Minister of Economy and Finance Aluseni Sanou, according to a press release. The talks focused on solar energy projects and geological exploration. A large part of the talks focused on the possible launch of a strategic project to build a low-power nuclear power plant of Russian design in Mali.
“The two sides agreed to continue to maintain close contact and coordinate their positions regularly as the joint work progresses.” This is reported by the press service of Rosatom.
In March, during the 13th International ATOMEXPO Exhibition and Forum in Sochi, Rosatom signed several agreements on developing nuclear energy cooperation with Mali, Burkina Faso and Algeria.
During the event, Ryan Collier, acting CEO of Rosatom Central and Southern Africa, said African countries have shown great interest in Rosatom’s nuclear energy and see Rosatom as a reliable global supplier. “A trusted partner.”
