August 26, 2024 (El Fasher) – Artillery shells hit a camp for displaced people in Sudan’s North Darfur state on Monday, killing at least 25 people and injuring dozens, officials said, the latest attack in a surge of violence in the region since April.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been fighting government forces in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, since the nationwide conflict between the two sides broke out in mid-May.

The paramilitary group has been accused of attacking civilians and looting in El Fasher, where it has besieged hundreds of thousands of people.

Ibrahim Khater, a health ministry official, said 25 people were killed and 40 injured in the shelling of the Abu Shouk refugee camp, which is home to some 400,000 displaced people.

The local resistance committee estimated the death toll at more than 20, with another 32 injured.

Witnesses said the Rapid Security Forces, which could not immediately be reached for comment, also shelled residential areas and a police hospital, forcing it to close.

The conflict in Darfur has brought back memories of the brutal civil war in the early 2000s that led to the creation of the Rapid Security Force.

The Abu Shouk attack is likely to raise further concerns about the humanitarian situation in El Fasher, where aid groups have warned of food and medicine shortages.
