The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said it had captured the strategic town of Meram in Sudan’s southwestern state of West Kordofan.
The Al-Meiram region is approximately 60 km from the South Sudan border.
“On Thursday, our heroic forces liberated the 92nd Bridge (Al Meiram) of the 22nd Infantry Division in West Kordofan and our forces have taken full control of the area,” the RSF announced on X (formerly Twitter).
The capture of Al-Meiram and its military base came after the war between the Sudanese army and the RSF reportedly lasted for more than 14 months.
The Rapid Security Forces made the announcement two weeks after they captured Fula, the capital of West Kordofan state.
Videos posted and shared online showed RSF fighters boasting that they had captured Al-Meiram, with some posing at the 92nd Brigade’s headquarters, cheering and chanting Allah akbar.
The military has not yet responded to the claim.
Radio Miraya, a United Nations-affiliated South Sudan also reported that the town of Meram had been captured by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to the radio station, most of the Sudanese armed forces deployed in Meram, including its commander at the rank of brigadier general, have reportedly surrendered to the South Sudanese army in the Walgait, Majak-Woi and Wal-Ain areas of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.
The statement noted that the fighting in the Meram area has displaced thousands of Sudanese and South Sudanese, who have poured into Northern Bahr el Ghazal state, facing a dire humanitarian situation.

As part of regional and international efforts to peacefully resolve the conflict, the Egyptian government called for a conference of Sudanese political forces in Cairo on July 7-8. The conference aims to bring together relevant regional and international partners to discuss solutions to the Sudanese war.
