Prime Minister Robert Abela, speaking at the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum in Tripoli on Wednesday, stressed the need for an inclusive strategy to address migration issues.
“Addressing the root causes of migration remains of utmost importance,” Abela said, acknowledging that migrants fall into two main categories: those fleeing conflict and those seeking economic opportunities. He stressed the need for specific solutions involving countries of origin, transit and destination.
The Prime Minister said that while managing borders was an important emergency measure, a broader approach was needed. He called for financial support to countries of origin to develop and create economic opportunities, but stressed that this must be done in a collaborative way to ensure mutual benefit.
“Malta is a small country but we are leading the way in the fight against human trafficking,” Abela said, stressing Malta’s role in promoting strategic cooperation between Europe and Africa on migration issues.
He commended the efforts of transit countries such as Libya and stressed that this was not a problem that could be solved by one country alone but required collective efforts.
Abela also referred to the Valletta Migration Summit held in Malta, noting that the principles laid down there are still relevant today. He stressed the need for strategies to improve the quality of life and reduce the desire for illegal immigration.
Abela began a two-day visit to Libya on Tuesday He met with Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibhe.
The two leaders signed an extension of a migration agreement originally signed in May 2020, under which the Libyan Coast Guard prevented thousands of asylum seekers and migrants from leaving and continuing across the Mediterranean towards Europe.
