Rivalry heats up as Eels take on Bears

The Cook Islands Rugby Union Premier League got off to a strong start last week, setting the stage for the much-anticipated Week 2. The Awati Unikau Eels and Arorangi Bears both won their opening matches and will be looking to continue their solid early season form when they meet at Awati Uaretere Park this afternoon.

Last night the Titikaweka Bulldogs faced off against the determined Tupapa Panthers in their first men’s match of Week 2. Both teams lost to the Bears and Eels respectively in their Week 1 matches.

The Panthers rebounded strongly to defeat the Bulldogs 32-0 at Aretre Park.

However, the highlight of this weekend’s fixture is undoubtedly the clash between the Eels and the Bears. This game promises to be a tight and intense one, with several standout players from last week set to play a major role as they look to keep their teams’ momentum going.

For the Eels, defender Tamatoa Nicolas, who scored the only goal last week, will be a key player for the team. His ability to read the game and exploit gaps in the opponent’s defense makes him a constant threat, while his solid positioning and counter-attacking skills are also important assets to the team.

Starting fifth-eighth Viiga Reupena, who caught Nicolas’ shot and kicked three crucial penalties, including the game-winner, will need to show the same precision and composure under pressure. Reupena’s tactical kicking, game management and ability to call plays will be key factors for the Bears’ defense.

Additionally, the high work rate and physicality of free forward Adin Kapi were key last week. His ability to gain possession on counterattacks and his relentless tackling will be key to disrupting the Bears’ offensive flow and earning turnovers.

For the Bears, the Heather brothers were the standouts last week. Robert and Tava each scored two goals, showcasing their strength, agility and power, making them a significant threat in the offensive phase.

Robert’s role in scrums and throw-ins provided stability and control which was vital in gaining and retaining possession. Tawa’s ability to penetrate the defensive line and create scoring chances was vital in challenging the Eels defence.

Heath Heather scored another point and played a key role in the forward line, supporting the offense and defense with his solid play. In addition, prop Daniel Tonorio’s support ability in the faceoff and breakaways played an important role in driving the team forward. His faceoff skills and ability to stabilize the front row were crucial in laying a solid foundation for the Bears’ offense.

In addition to the senior matches, several junior development matches will be held today. U8 to U16 teams will compete in a village vs town format to promote grassroots rugby and develop young talent.

The Maine Tuepolos will also travel, and the Maine Whites and Maine Blacks will provide opportunities for young girls to compete.
