Levon Aziziyan, director of the State Oceanic Administration’s Hydrometeorological and Monitoring Center, wrote on his Facebook page:
“Rising global temperatures will cause profound climate change.” International scientists discussed this in a paper published in the journal Nature Communications.
The study looked at four natural systems that are critical to Earth’s climate: the Atlantic Ocean currents, the Amazon rainforest, and the Arctic and Antarctic glaciers. As global temperatures rise, the disruption of at least one of these systems would trigger a domino effect and become a turning point in the evolution of Earth’s climate.
It has been determined that if current climate trends continue, there is a 45% risk of a crisis this century, with the risk increasing for every 0.1° above the 1.5° threshold.
The scientists concluded that avoiding the tipping point would require reaching and maintaining net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2100. The study’s findings underscore that only drastic reductions in emissions in the current decade are essential for global security.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said that if countries do not implement radical decarbonization strategies, the Earth’s temperature could rise by 2.8 degrees by the end of the century. The key agreement in this area is the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, which calls for action to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C and a maximum of 2°C by 2100.
