In Milan, music under the stars, the 12th Milan Concerto, with the Filarmonica della Scala conducted by Riccardo Chailly in Piazza del Duomo. The summer festival season begins with the opening of Glyndebourne and the legendary long interval picnic. At the Pentecost Festival in Salzburg, artistic director Cecilia Bartoli presents Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito, directed by Robert Carson, with herself as Sesto.

Milan

On June 9, the Filarmonica della Scala performed the 12th edition of the Milan Concerto in Piazza del Duomo with chief conductor Riccardo Chailly and violinist Emmanuel Tjeknavorian. It was the mutual attraction between symphonic music and great cinema that dominated the evening’s program. Tjeknavorian was the soloist in the suite from Darius Milhaud’s ballet Le boeuf sur le toit, subtitled “A cinematic fantasy with a South American theme”, which Milhaud wanted to use as the soundtrack for a Charlie Chaplin film. Then there was the page of John Williams, with the famous violin themes from Schindler’s List, E.T. and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Luchino Visconti’s “Leopard” Suite will be performed by Nino Rota. Opening with the creative energy of John Adams, “Lollapalooza” (9:30 p.m.), TV and radio stations include Rai 5, Rai Radio 3 and Arte.

The opera festival takes place from May 16 to August 25 Glyndebourne, The theatre has been hosting performances in the unique setting of the English Meadows since 1934. Carmen opens with Aigul Akhmetshina in the title role, having recently performed the same role with success at Covent Garden, and Robin Ticciati conducting (as usual) with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Salzburg

Pentecost on the 17th and 19th, with Mozart’s “Clemenza di Tito”; with Cecilia Bartoli, directed by Gianluca Capuano, and with “Les Musiciens du Prince”, directed by Robert Carsen. The show can also be seen at the Summer Festival, which opens on July 19th.
