Retail sales fell nearly 1% in June

The June retail sales data was adjusted for calendar day because sales are higher on some days of the week than on others. Without this adjustment, retail sales in June 2024 would be 2.4% lower than a year ago.

Non-food industry turnover increased by 0.2%

Non-food industry turnover increased by 0.2% in June compared to the same period last year. Sales value (turnover adjusted for price changes) was 0.9% higher than in the same period last year.

In June, sales in consumer electronics, white goods and pharmacies increased year-on-year. However, sales in DIY products (including kitchen and flooring), footwear and leather goods, leisure goods, furniture and homewares, and clothing stores all fell.

Food industry turnover down 2.2%

In June, turnover in food, beverage and tobacco stores fell by 2.2%. Sales fell by 4.6%. Sales in supermarkets fell by 3.0%, while turnover in specialist stores increased by 4.3%.

Online sales increased by 2.2%

Online retailers’ turnover increased by 2.2% in June compared to the same period last year. Online retailers (whose core activity is selling goods and services via the internet) saw their turnover increase by 9.2%. Meanwhile, multichannel retailers (retailers whose secondary activity is selling goods and services via the internet) saw their online sales turnover fall by 6.1%.

In June 2024, online sales of food and personal care products, as well as other non-food items, were higher than a year ago. However, online sales of clothing and fashion items declined.
