The Ministry of Education of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia adopted the Secondary School Pathway System in 2024.

The secondary school program lasts for 3 years and is divided into 9 semesters.

Studies begin with a joint first year, which includes a variety of science and humanities subjects, followed by two professional years.

Goals of the High School General Curriculum

Through the overall track, the Ministry seeks to achieve the following goals:

  • Develop talents who can enter the labor market or continue their education
  • Promote a sense of belonging, national identity and religious values
  • Provide diverse educational opportunities and enhance learning opportunities
  • Improving the efficiency of the secondary education system
  • Providing advanced educational courses that meet the needs of the times

Here is a set of instructions for studying in a normal course:

  • Registration requirements have not changed
  • Extended subjects are offered over two or three semesters
  • A pass in an extended subject is considered as a separate subject with a pass grade associated with it
  • 6 to 7 servings per day
  • Graduation requirements include a final project, volunteer work, and success in all subjects
  • The pass rate is 50%
  • The success rate is 20% of the final exam score.
  • Grade distribution: 60% of the year’s homework and 40% of the final exam
  • The cumulative average is calculated at 20% from the first year, 40% from the second year, and 40% from the third year.

Skills achieved on general tracks

The Ministry of Education has issued a guideline clarifying instructions for the implementation of the common first grade system at the secondary level in public and private schools, Quran recitation schools, Saudi overseas schools, night schools and senior girls’ schools.

This guide aims to improve the educational environment and link educational outcomes with labour market needs.
