The study on railway connection between Sangzi and Gelepu to India will be completed by the end of this year.
Foreign Affairs and Exports Minister DN Dungey held a press conference in July that two railway lines have been identified between India and Bhutan.
The two countries have decided to use the Bannerhat project site in Samtse as a competition site,” he said.
The 70-km long Gelegphu to Kograjar border railway line has been finalised, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport announced, while the western railway line will be completed and the government is working on the structure and flow chart through consultations, it said.
Similarly, the 16-km Samtse-Banarhat border railway line has been completed and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Railways. In fact, a survey is underway and the Western Railway has proposed two locations. “There is a need to look into the matter,” he said.
As part of the launch of the project, rail connectivity between Bhutan and India will be studied at the technical level, he said.
Details of the project report will be released after the signing of the Sino-Bhutanese friendly agreement earlier this year.
Former Indian Foreign Secretary Bine Mohan Watra conducted an engineering study for several months and the construction work will be completed in a month, after which a report on the construction work will be submitted.
The Indian government is confident of its decision to complete the railway line on time.
Currently, Bhutanese exporters are transporting goods to the Indian border by truck, and the railway line between China and Bhutan is expected to boost tourism and trade between the two countries, which have a population of 100,000.
He said the railway will eliminate transportation challenges, the people will develop the economy, and both countries will benefit from the national economy and strengthen the consensus between the two countries.
In 2008, when Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Bhutan, Narolov said that the railway line would be built to commemorate Bhutan’s 50th anniversary.
He said all the budget for the rail corridor project has been expended.
The agreement was signed in 2005 with the aim of connecting the two countries.
