In the second half of 2023, more than a quarter of TikTok removal requests worldwide came from this country.
(Atmosphere) – According to The Straits Times, in the second half of last year, Malaysia made 1,862 requests to TikTok to remove content, 5.5 times the number six months ago.
TikTok’s semi-annual transparency report stated that Malaysia made 2,202 removal requests to TikTok in 2023, an increase of more than 30 times from 70 in 2022, making it the country with the most such requests in the world.
Australia ranked second with 651 applications. In Southeast Asia, Indonesia ranked second with 351 applications, and Singapore ranked third with 47 applications.
Malaysia alone accounted for more than a quarter of global demolition demand during this period.
TikTok did not provide details on the content it was asked to restrict in Malaysia. The company said it only removes content that violates its community guidelines or local laws.
A similar trend was observed on Meta, the platform that owns Facebook and Instagram.
Meta reported that Malaysia implemented 8,600 content restrictions last year, a 15-fold increase from 553 in 2022.
The report cited social media industry insiders as saying calls for restrictions would continue to grow in 2024 as authorities deploy personnel to scour platforms for offensive content.
“The vast majority (of removal requests) are political,” said one person involved in the content restriction process. “Probably over 90%.”
