The surgical team at Burjeel Specialist Hospital in Sharjah successfully treated a 63-year-old patient with a giant retroperitoneal tumor weighing 16 kg, who had been suffering from abdominal distension for eight years and whose daily life was difficult for him to walk, sit or even lie in bed.

Although he had known about the diagnosis for years, he was afraid to undergo surgery, and when the tumor symptoms began to significantly worsen over the past few months, he decided to take action.

Patients experience symptoms including disrupted sleep patterns, swelling in the feet and ankles extending to the knees, and back pain that limits their daily activities.

Diagnostic abdominal imaging revealed a large heterogeneous mass with solid and calcified fatty components that displaced bowel loops superiorly, compressed the aorta and inferior vena cava, and caused lateral displacement of the bladder.

Considering the size of the tumor and associated symptoms, a multidisciplinary tumor board including oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, and nuclear medicine specialists recommended surgical intervention.

After bilateral ureteral catheterization, the patient underwent a complex laparotomy to resect the retroperitoneal tumor.

Dr Muhammad Bashiruddin Anandar said: “The size of the tumour required careful planning and execution. The mass was compressing major blood vessels including the aorta and had multiple sources of blood supply, which we managed carefully.”

The patient said after the operation: “I remember that my stomach was very big when I went to bed, and it was flat when I woke up. I lost nearly 20 kilograms.”

Symptoms reported by patients include disrupted sleep patterns and swelling in the feet and ankles.
