August 5, 2024 – On this new moon Monday, presidential candidate Tommy Esang Remengesau, Jr. officially announced his candidacy at the Palau Election Commission. With the support of his family and friends, the grassroots candidate submitted his candidacy after receiving more than 5,000 petition signatures.
In response to claims that his candidacy was unconstitutional, he reiterated: “We always abide by the rules and the Constitution, and we conduct careful research and seek legal advice before taking any action. Our declaration today is a direct response to the call of the people of Palau, and I remain committed to serving their interests with integrity and dedication in accordance with the constitutional intent.”
Former President Remengesau announced his intention to run for president again in February this year. He said that his motivation for running was the petition signed by the public calling on him to run again.
The Palau Election Commission will review all nominations and certify their eligibility within the next two weeks.
