What is macOS 15 Sequoia?
macOS 15 Sequoia is the latest Mac operating system, released at WWDC on June 10, 2024. The name Sequoia continues Apple’s trend of naming operating systems after regions in California, with previous versions named Sonoma, Ventura, Monterey, and Big Sur. Sequoia is a national park in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
This is the first Mac operating system to support Apple Intelligence, the company’s proprietary artificial BroadCast Unitedligence platform. AI features include audio transcription in Notes, smart replies in Mail, and smarter Siri Ability to understand natural language prompts.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, said in a statement Press release: “The power of Apple silicon combined with the legendary ease of use of macOS makes the Mac more powerful than ever. Today, we’re excited to take macOS to the next level with macOS Sequoia, a major release that’s designed to make macOS even more productive and smarter.
“macOS Sequoia introduces Apple Intelligence and unlocks incredible new capabilities that will revolutionize the way people work on their Mac. What are the main features of macOS 15 Sequoia?
Apple Intelligence
Writing Tools
When you highlight a piece of text on Sequoia and right-click, you’ll see a number of AI writing tools:
- A proofreader will check the text and make suggestions for grammar and spelling.
- A rewrite would rewrite the entire section in a friendly, professional, or concise style.
- You can also click “Summary” or “Key Points” to extract the main content of the text.
Writing tools will appear everywhere you can write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps. In Mail, emails in your inbox will be previewed with AI-generated summaries instead of a summary of the subject line or first sentence. When typing a reply, macOS Sequoia will give you a number of smart reply options generated using the original email content.

notes
Notes now comes with audio transcription and summarization capabilities using Apple Intelligence. This means the app can activate your Mac microphone during a meeting and generate a transcription and summary of the discussion in real time. Notes will also automatically resolve any calculations entered in Notes.

Picture Playground
Image Playground is an AI image generation tool included in macOS 15. It’s a dedicated app that’s built into native apps like Messages and Pages, so you can create and use AI images in them. macOS suggests prompts based on the context of the open app, or you can enter your own.
Siri
Siri has been enhanced with Apple Intelligence. New features include screen awareness, in-app actions, text commands, and better understanding of natural language commands. It also has a new look that looks like a glowing light bar that wraps around the sides of the screen and pulses to show it’s listening.

ChatGPT and Private Cloud Computing
While Apple Intelligence runs on the hardware built into your Mac, for some functions it doesn’t provide enough computing power; therefore, macOS 15 provides the ability to connect to ChatGPT without leaving the app. ChatGPT can be used to get real-time information that can’t be accessed on the device, as well as more powerful text and image generation capabilities.

But ChatGPT isn’t the only option for Mac users to access additional computing resources. More intensive requests can be routed through Apple’s new cloud BroadCast Unitedligence system, Private Cloud Compute, which sends requests to external Apple servers. The data transmitted during this process is not stored or accessible to Apple, ensuring privacy.
Other Features
iPhone Mirroring
iPhone Mirroring allows users to fully access and interact with their iPhone through their Mac. The phone’s wallpaper and icons appear as a window on the PC screen, so users can view notifications, open apps, and perform tasks on their phone using the Mac’s controls. While iPhone Mirroring is in progress, the iPhone remains locked to ensure its privacy.

Safari
Apple has made a number of upgrades to Safari as part of the macOS 15 update. The button in the address bar now displays page highlights when clicked, such as a summary of the page content, directions via a map, or links to more information.
The Reader tool has been revamped to provide a simpler view of the content you’re reading. There are new color and font customization options, and a table of contents and summary are displayed in the sidebar for longer articles.
If a video appears on a webpage, Safari will enlarge it and center it, or put it in a smaller popup window when the user changes windows.

Window Tiling
If a user has multiple windows open on the desktop and drags one of them to the edge of the screen, macOS Sequoia will automatically move and resize them so that they are arranged in an intuitive tiled arrangement to maximize visibility.

videoconference
When using video conferencing apps like Zoom or FaceTime, macOS Sequoia shows the presenter exactly what other attendees will see when they share their screen, before actually sharing it. They can also use built-in or custom backgrounds during video calls.
