The House of Representatives approved House Resolution No. 1192 on Monday, reiterating the requirement to complete the contract signed between the government and the LUMA Energy Consortium.
The resolution submitted by the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) delegation was “in response to the company’s failure to restore full service before Storm Ernesto passed through Puerto Rico.”
Likewise, the legislative article condemns LUMA Energy’s “contempt” for the Legislature and the constitutional prerogatives of the mayor. Allegations include failure to comply with requests to provide requested information and lack of access to members of the national media.
“This resolution sends a clear message: LUMA is bad and we are united in terminating this contract. The technical process, yes, we are going to court; if the parties do not honor the contract itself, the executive branch will have to go to court,” said House Speaker Rafael “Tatito” Hernández Montañez.
“It is clear to the people that LUMA is not good, and if LUMA is not good, we should take steps to get them out of Puerto Rico. “We don’t want LUMA in the House of Representatives, we want them out of Puerto Rico,” he added.
On the other hand, a resolution was passed with a large vote “condemning the serious human rights violations taking place in Venezuela under Nicolás Maduro and denying the ongoing allegations of fraud in the country’s last electoral cycle.”
House Resolution 1189 was approved during legislative work that included the presence of citizens sympathetic to the Venezuelan people in the stands. Hundreds of Venezuelans living in Puerto Rico joined the global protests on Saturday, demonstrating on the north steps of the Capitol in support of the opposition.
“Today, we stand together as brothers from the Caribbean with those who express solidarity with us,” Hernández Montañez said during his speech. “Unfortunately, the democratic process, which is so close to us, does not allow the Venezuelan people to express themselves freely. We cannot remain silent.”
The Chamber leader explained that the resolution first demands transparency in the electoral process and “categorically” rejects the management of the Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE). In addition, the legislative article “repudiates the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro and recognizes the true democratic victor of the electoral campaign: Edmundo González Urrutia”.
“For us, it’s outrageous and we fully agree with this resolution, which seeks to comply with the will of the Venezuelan people as expressed through the democratic voting system, which must be respected,” said Carlos “Johnny” Mendes Núñez, spokesman for the New Progressive Party (PNP).
