Rehabilitation and empowerment courses launched by Youth JOG

On Thursday, August 8, an important step in the development of young people at the Youth Educational Governance (JOG) was marked with the launch of the “Empowerment and Restorative Justice” project curriculum presented by the students themselves.

The initiative aims to empower young people, guide them in their recovery process, and prepare them for a positive future.

The Empowerment and Restorative Justice project stems from the need to support the resocialization process of young people and strengthen the voices of these young people.

Not only does the program give students the opportunity to actively participate in their own recovery journey, it also allows them to learn valuable life skills to help them reintegrate into society.

The curriculum includes topics such as social skills, emotional intelligence and the importance of taking responsibility for your own choices.

Special Lecture

During the showcase held in the recreation room of the Central Prison Institute (CPI), students proudly displayed their work and shared their experiences and insights into the learning process.

They demonstrated growth, self-reflection and teamwork, which are all vital elements in their recovery process. The students also let the guests show their talents in poetry, singing, painting and more.

The public prosecutor’s office, UNICEF and sociologist Sabine de Vries have joined forces to realize this project.

Between April and August 2024, De Vries, who serves as the project coordinator, and her team held numerous meetings with students at JOG and the Opa Doelie Youth Transit Center.

The process will continue in September, during which topics such as mental health awareness will be discussed.

Future steps

The team will consider the feedback collected from students to further improve the course and adapt it to their needs.

Through this course, the prosecution hopes to start a new phase of guidance and support within youth education institutions and the Opa Doeli Youth Transit Center.

Finally, the JOG students not only presented the course, but also made their voice heard. “Wi Na Winiman” was the slogan of the day and was heard throughout the whole process. This showed that these young people also have the power to create change.

After the presentation, the students received certificates and gifts and had a pleasant party with the guests.
