Jakarta(ANTARA) –
President Joko Widodo urged regional leaders to plan urban development around specific goals, saying they must follow the example of Nusantara, which has set a goal of becoming a forest city of the future.
He said that as a forest city, Indonesia’s new capital will prioritize environmental friendliness and sustainable development, and focus on maintaining its green spaces and natural ecosystems.
“Nusantara is a model of a future city, it has future plans and concepts. Nusantara is a forest city, not a concrete city,” he added while giving instructions to regional leaders at the Nusantara State Palace on Tuesday.
Widodo introduced that High Point, North Carolina, USA, is known as the “Furniture Capital of the World”, which means that the city government has set the furniture industry as its development goal.
“We have the same potential in Jepara County. The county chief should conceive the design or concept, which may take two terms of leadership to complete and should be detailed and final,” he suggested.
The Jepara region in Central Java is nationally renowned for its Javanese teak carving art and locally made furniture.
He then gave the example of a city in California, USA, which focused on developing the golf industry and eventually had 37 golf courses.
Jokowi said Indonesian regions, such as Nusa Tenggara, must incorporate more technological advances in regional development to meet the increasingly digital life.
“The changing times have given us a good impetus. Now is the time to integrate digital or other technologies to make (Nusantara) a liveable city where residents can feel comfortable,” he added.
“I believe that all provinces, regions and cities should also work in this direction,” he said.
