NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Representatives from various government ministries, including law enforcement and national security, and the disabled community, attended the National Family Week Sports and Fun Day organized by the Ministry of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting at the Thomas Robinson Stadium on Saturday (July 27).
The overall champion was taken by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, followed by the Department of Immigration and the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services (BDOCS) in third place. The event was designed to promote “family fun and community spirit” and other participants included the T-Bird Flyers and Swift Track Clubs, Breezes SuperClubs, Courtyard by Marriott, the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the Customs Department and individual families.
The National Family Week celebrations, held from July 25 to 31, under the theme “Strong Families, Strong Communities”, included activities such as the Sports and Fun Day on Saturday, the Family Empowerment Forum (held on Thursday, July 25), and the Men’s Empowerment Forum hosted by the Men’s Office of the Department of Gender and Family Affairs, Ministry of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting.
“It’s a good thing when families are able to take time out for wholesome activities,” said Myles K. LaRoda, Secretary of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting. “It strengthens family bonds and solidifies relationships. Families play an important role in our society. The stronger the family, the stronger the community.”
Minister LaRoda expressed appreciation for all participants and their families’ attendance. Children attending the event were able to participate in several activities free of charge, including the bouncy castle and slide. Many vendors/exhibitors also had the opportunity to benefit from the activities, including the Sisters Breast Cancer Support Group and Unlimited Capacity. The Sisters Breast Cancer Support Group provides a safe and caring environment for those whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer.
“This sports and fun day is aimed at promoting family unity. Today’s event is also aimed at fostering community spirit among the various government ministries, departments and other participating entities. While enjoying the event, please take a moment to connect with one another. Let us continue to strengthen family unity; take the necessary breaks and spend quality time together,” added Minister Laroda.
National Family Week is organized by the Ministry of Gender and Family Affairs as part of the Ministry’s overall approach to achieving its vision and goals of helping Bahamians improve their lives. This includes developing a year-round strategy aimed at creating “an atmosphere conducive to building stronger families.”
In the coming months, we will intensify our empowerment strategy for both men and women through training programmes, restructuring to maximise productivity and skills development.
