BBIS Minister Albert Ramdin said at a press conference on Wednesday evening that Surinamese government revenues are still too little to pay the expected salaries.
“I find it strange that nine months before the election, all the unions want to make a lot of demands that we simply cannot achieve. People also know this. I know that is their role, but we have to show some realism,” Ramdin said of the negotiations with the various unions, which should result in a pay increase for all public servants.
Discussions between the negotiating body and the various union groups are still ongoing. According to the minister, the two sides aim to meet again in order to reach a final agreement.
“The government is always willing to look at how we can do more in the future. We can also reach a deal for the future. But what we can do at the moment, let us be very clear: this government will not give loans for consumption expenditure in the sense of wage increases. Because wages must be paid according to earning capacity. You have to earn money before you can spend it,” the minister stressed.
Ravaksur plus is demanding a 35% wage hike, including an increase in purchasing power of SRD 3,500. The trade union movement says the government has so far proposed 10%. Ramdin himself sees excessive and unrealistic demands in other trade unions.
The minister also argued that the lack of unity within the union movement was a disgrace, which meant negotiations had to be held with individual unions. However, he said the end result would be the same for all unions.
Ramdin believes there is a process towards greater progress and economic prosperity, but it is not happening yet. He asks for the support of the trade union movement to collaborate in this regard so that everyone will benefit in the end.
