Nearly 44% of rail freight (by weight) is transported in containers. Containerized freight volumes fell 11.5% from 2017 to 17.3 million tonnes in 2023. Container quantity Container traffic also fell by 11.5%. Most of the cargo transported in containers comes from or is destined for Germany and Italy. The largest drop in container traffic was in the Netherlands, from 2.2 million tonnes to 1.6 million tonnes (down 27.9%).

Rail transport of coal and metal ores has declined

In addition to containerized cargo, the most common types of cargo transported by rail in the Netherlands are coal and metal ores. In 2023, rail transported 22.1% less coal and 4.6% less metal ores. Rail transport of other common cargo types also fell compared to the previous year. Chemical transport fell by 3.7% and metal (including steel) transport fell by 10%.

Two-way freight volumes down

Most rail freight is loaded onto the railway in the Netherlands and unloaded abroad. However, the volume of exported goods fell to 24 million tonnes in 2023, down 12.0% from the previous year. In particular, the volume of coal shipped to Germany fell by 22.3%.

A total of 10.1 million tonnes of cargo arrived from Germany, down 4.0%. The decline was mainly due to containerized cargo (down 10.1%) and metal ores and other minerals (down 38.3%). In 2023, bulk imports of products in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries category increased (up 45.3%). This category includes cereal crops and corn.

Domestic transport and transit trade (goods transported between two locations outside the Netherlands via the Dutch railway system) fell by 27.3% and 15.8% respectively last year.
