IAEA wants independent assessment of nuclear power plant safety
Before leaving, Grossi said he wanted to know more about Kursk region He called the situation “serious” given the fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces near the site. He said the IAEA could only assess the safety of the plant if it had a chance to independently assess the situation there.
Ukrainian troops launched a surprise incursion into the Kursk region on August 6. They have since penetrated to within about 30 kilometers of the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, one of Russia’s four largest nuclear power plants.
Last week, Russia informed the IAEA that Ukraine had attempted to attack the power plant with a drone on the night of August 22. It was shot down and found near a depot for spent nuclear fuel. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called it an act of nuclear terrorism that required an immediate response from the IAEA.
