MEDAN, North Sumatra (ANTARA) – Hassan Abdullah Alibrahim, a chef from Qatar, said he was inspired by visiting the Petisah Market in Medan, North Sumatra, where he saw a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and spices.
His visit took place on Sunday as part of the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Cultural Year programme.
“I get inspiration and know what dishes to cook. Maybe I will make food that combines Qatari and Indonesian culture,” Ali Brahim told between The Petisah market here on Sunday.
He observed that the vegetables, fruits and spices sold at the Petisah market were unique and interesting, admitting that there were some things he had never even tasted.
So, accompanied by the famous Qatari chef Noof Ali Marri, Ali Brahim bought some spices to take home, one of which was Andaliman (Sichuan peppercorn).
They also tasted several fruits sold in the market, such as tamarillo and mango.
“The taste was very interesting. It was a good experience for me. As a chef, I really enjoy visiting traditional places like this and seeing the goods sold there,” he said.

During the visit, Ari Brahim and Mari were also accompanied by Indonesian chef Arsyan Dwianto, the third runner-up of the ninth season of MasterChef Indonesia.
They were joined by Santhi Serad, coordinator of the Eid and Qatar-Indonesia Culinary Tours programme and one of the founders of the I Love Indonesian Cuisine (ACMI) community.
Serrade said she took two Qatari chefs to traditional markets like the Petisa market so they could observe firsthand the local culinary culture — in this case, North Sumatra’s.
“To observe the characteristics of a region’s cuisine, spices and natural potential, we have to go to traditional markets,” she added.
The annual cultural activities of the Qatar-Indonesia Year of Culture 2023 are being held in three regions, namely Papua (June 19-24, 2023), Medan, North Sumatra (June 24-26), and Bali (June 27-July 2).
In Medan, the chefs participated in a series of activities such as visiting the Petisa Market, taking part in a cooking workshop at the Medan 14th Vocational School and cooking traditional Batak snacks in local residents’ homes.
