“Israel’s establishment of settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and the establishment and maintenance of the regime associated with them are in violation of international law,” said Nawaf Salam, president of the International Court of Justice, in reading out the advisory opinion.
Salam stressed that Israel practices systematic discrimination against Palestinians in the occupied territories.
Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem in 1967 in a bloody war widely known as the Six-Day War or Naqsa, meaning “setback.” In six days, Israel overran much of Palestine and forced at least 300,000 Palestinians to flee their homes.
The current case is unrelated to the case South Africa brought last year on whether Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
Previously, the International Court of Justice issued provisional measures on January 26, ordering Israel to prevent incitement of genocide in order to provide more humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
