Within the framework of the principles of the State of Qatar and its enthusiasm for building bridges, openness and cooperation with brotherly and friendly countries and peoples, His Excellency Nicos Christodoulides, President of the Official Republic of Cyprus, paid a visit to the country.
Today, His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani received the President of the Republic of Cyprus, His Excellency Nicos Christodoulides, and his accompanying delegation at the Emir Diwan.
His Highness the Emir of the country and His Excellency President Nicos Christodoulides are holding discussions on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to develop them, as well as discussing a number of issues of common concern.
This visit and talks have opened up broad prospects for the development of cooperation between the two countries in various fields, and will benefit the two countries and their friendly peoples.
The State of Qatar and the Republic of Cyprus have strong, long-standing friendly relations based on mutual respect and consensus on many international and regional issues, as well as the common desire of the leaders of the two countries to raise the level of bilateral relations to an advanced level of cooperation in all fields.
The State of Qatar and the Republic of Cyprus established diplomatic relations in 2001 and established permanent embassies in each other’s capitals in 2004. The Embassy of Qatar was established in Nicosia in 2007 as the first Gulf embassy of the Republic of Cyprus.
Since then, the relationship between the two countries has developed rapidly in all fields, especially in the fields of reconstruction and natural gas, which has also added an active and extremely important base in the central Mediterranean for the Qatari economy. Qatar has always been keen to expand its international circle of relations, diversify its foreign investment areas and locations, and build constructive and fruitful bridges of cooperation with peoples of all countries in the world.
There are a number of agreements and memorandums of understanding regulating relations between the State of Qatar and the Republic of Cyprus, covering political, economic, commercial, technical, educational, legal, health and tourism cooperation, as well as energy, desalination, banking and finance, encouragement and protection of mutual investments, air transport, avoidance of double taxation, etc., which will promote bilateral cooperation in various fields.
The relationship between Doha and Nicosia has been strengthened through numerous mutual visits at various levels, the most important of which was the visit of His Highness the Emir Father Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to the Republic of Cyprus in 2010, which strengthened the relationship between the two countries and during which several important agreements were signed between the two countries, and the visit of former President of the Republic of Cyprus His Excellency Dimitris Christofias to Doha in 2009. The former President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades visited Qatar in 2014 with a high-level official and business delegation, which included several ministers and more than 60 businessmen and representatives of large companies in Cyprus.
During that visit, speaking at a ceremony organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Doha, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Qatar-Cyprus Business Forum and the Cyprus Ministry of Energy, Trade, Industry and Tourism, His Excellency the former President of Cyprus stressed the importance that Cyprus attaches to strengthening and enhancing economic relations with the State of Qatar and noted that his visit to Doha underlined the importance that Cyprus attaches to improving and strengthening these relations.
He expressed his pleasure at having confirmed during an expanded meeting with the country’s Emir, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, that they share a common goal of strengthening and expanding cooperation between Doha and Nicosia, especially in the economic field, in order to usher in a new era of prosperity for both countries.
His Excellency stated that promising growth opportunities exist in many other sectors of Cyprus, including: maritime transport, tourism, large development projects, education, health, research and renewable energy, noting that all of these sectors were discussed during the official meeting held with the country’s Emir, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the two countries’ ministers.
His Excellency called on Qatari businessmen to explore investment opportunities in his country and to establish commercial and economic partnerships between Qatari companies and their Cypriot counterparts, stressing that his country is ready to encourage all Qatari investments in this field.
In recognition of the excellence of Qatar-Cyprus relations, His Excellency Nicos Anastasiades, former President of Cyprus, inaugurated the new building of the Qatar Embassy in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, in December 2021. During the ceremony, it was announced that the name of the street where the embassy building is located will be changed to /Qatar Street/, and the park next to the embassy building will be called /Doha Park/.
In his speech, His Excellency the former President of Cyprus stated that the political and economic relations between the Republic of Cyprus and the State of Qatar have undergone significant development and continued to grow in recent years.
The Republic of Cyprus is located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Basin. It is the third largest island after Sicily and Sardinia, with an area of 9,250 square kilometers and a population of more than 1.26 million. It is strategically located between the three continents of Europe, Asia and Africa, and its membership of the European Union makes it a broad gateway for many activities in the business, tourism and economic fields. Cyprus is classified as a high-income country, with a per capita income ranking 16th in the world, and its economic performance is considered one of the best among many economies in the European Union.
Cyprus’ economy is based primarily on tourism and the services sector, with approximately three quarters of Cypriots employed in the services sector, while the agricultural sector employs five percent of the workforce. There are good growth opportunities in many other sectors on the island, including: oil and gas, maritime, tourism and extensive development, education, health, research and renewable energy, and the government aims to maintain Cyprus’ reputation as a reliable financial center and an attractive investment destination.
It is estimated that the tech sector contributed €3 billion to the Cypriot economy last year (2022) through more than 1,200 foreign companies. Shipping is one of the most important pillars of the Cypriot economy and makes a significant contribution to it. The island is considered the largest ship management center in Europe and one of the largest in the world, and also has a large shipping group of more than 250 shipping companies, providing a wide range of shipping-related activities such as ship management, chartering and marine insurance.
