On September 1, 2004, the first day of school in Russia, more than 30 Islamic terrorists captured more than 1,100 children, their parents and teachers at a school in the city of Beslan. The terrorists demanded the release of Chechen prisoners.
334 hostages were killed in the school attack, 186 of whom were children. Many of the surviving hostages suffered from disabilities. The attack was carried out by then Chechen terrorist leader Shamil Basayev, who was killed in 2006.
After three years of reconstruction, the school in Beslan will become a patriotic cultural center for the prevention of terrorism.
After ending his visit to North Ossetia, Putin arrived in Chechnya.
