The national under-18 team won the bronze medal in the World Cup preliminary round by defeating Cuba 3-2 at the Rod Carew Stadium in Panama on Sunday.
Criollos de Caguas beat Leones de Ponce to advance to BSN finals
Puerto Rico finished the tournament with a 5-3 record and qualified for the 2025 Under-18 World Cup.
Kaniel Rosado was the winning pitcher against Cuba, allowing just one in four innings beat He struck out five and walked five. Luis Figueroa, Joniel Cuadrado and Yandiel Reyes made the saves, which came in relief.
Offensively, Jatniel McCloud was the highlight of the game, scoring a couple of runs, and Puerto Rico took a commanding lead in the second inning on a single by Dickey Gonzalez and an error.
During the tournament, Puerto Rico defeated Brazil, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Canada and Cuba.
Puerto Rican Adonys Vélez led the way in the tournament with a home run. He also led the team in offensive average, hitting eight hits in 21 official at-bats, for a .381 OPS.
The team will arrive in Puerto Rico today (Monday) at 10:30 p.m.
Double-A ball: Florida Titans on the brink of a championship
The Florida Titans defeated Azucarreros de Yabucoa 5-2 in a game held at Francisco Negron Díaz Stadium in Las Piedras on Sunday.
Florida State leads 3-1 in the series finale.
With Yabukoa leading 1-0 after six innings, the Titans turned the game around with three runs in the seventh inning to take a commanding lead. A wild pitch by Cristian González tied the score, and a single by Abdier Rivera made it 3-1.
Yabukoa led off the first inning when Yan Hernandez hit a solo homer off a pitch by left-hander Joshua Santiago, who pitched seven innings for the win. He allowed two runs, one earned. He struck out four and walked two. Jonathan Castellanos got the save and retired two batters in the ninth. The game ended with a strikeout of pinch hitter Edward Gonzalez.
In the eighth inning, Daniel Figueroa hit a single to score Florida’s fourth run. In the same inning, Rubén Castro’s ground ball brought the Azucareros their second run, and in the ninth inning, Rivera’s double brought the North Side’s fifth run.
Cristian González lost seven innings for the Azucareros, allowing five hits and four runs, including one earned run.
The series will continue with Game 5 at the Pedro Roman Melendez Stadium in Manati on Monday, August 12, 2024 at 8:00 pm.
