Puerto Rico loses to Spain in another close game – Metro Puerto Rico

In the second game of the Puerto Rico team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Puerto Rican team lost to the Spanish team 63-62.

It was another close game for Puerto Rico, who had a similar performance against Spain as they did against Serbia.

Puerto Rico had trouble scoring in the first half against a strong Spanish team. In the first quarter, Spain scored 18 points, while Puerto Rico scored only 9 points. In the second quarter, Puerto Rico increased the lead to 16 points, but Spain did not stop attacking and scored 21 points in a row, leading 39-25 into the half.

Puerto Rico led 9-3 at the start of the third quarter. Arera Gilantes scored 9 points, and he had already contributed 12 points in the game. Entering the fourth quarter, Puerto Rico made a wonderful comeback with a 19-5 run, tying the score at 44-44.

With about seven minutes left, Pamela Rosado hit a three-pointer to give Puerto Rico a 52-50 lead. Seconds later, India Pagán made a basket to extend the lead to 54-50, forcing Spain to call an emergency timeout. Puerto Rico led 57-52, but Spain tied the score at 59 with 2:41 left.

Girantes made two free throws to give Puerto Rico a 60-59 lead, but Mariana Ortiz’s basket put Spain back ahead at 60-61 with 1:16 left. Mya Hollingshed put Puerto Rico ahead at 62-61 with 9.9 seconds left.

With one second left, Pagan committed a personal foul and Spain went to the free throw line to regain the lead 63-62. Puerto Rico had the extra possession, but they were unable to execute to close out the game.
