The Presidency of the Council of Ministers announced the launch of the third edition of the publication “The Last Step to National Liberation – A Chronology”. Originally published in 2009 to mark the tenth anniversary of the popular consultation, and later republished on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the referendum, this work is now available again on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the referendum, celebrating the determination and courage of the Timorese people. This special edition includes a message from Prime Minister Kay Rala: The people who suffered are the people who won the battle!!! – The people are the great heroes of independence!!!”

The publication also features a new foreword by Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Agio Pereira, who recalls the resilience of the Timorese people and the importance of using this history as a source of learning and inspiration.

In his preface, Minister Agio noted that “the Popular Consultation held on 30 August 1999 was a pivotal moment in this journey, representing the sovereign will of a people who had faced decades of occupation, repression and humanitarian challenges” and expressed the hope that “may this publication inspire people to build a more just and democratic future, not only in East Timor, but in all nations seeking the path to freedom.” Screenshot 2024-08-27 180128

The launch of the third edition is an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices and courage shown by the East Timorese on their path to self-determination. The chronology in the publication documents the events that took place between 5 May and 4 September 1999, highlighting decisive moments such as the raising of the flag of the National Council of Resistance of East Timor (CNRT) in Dili for the first time on 15 August 1999, an event full of symbolism and emotion.

The publication will be symbolically handed over by the Timorese Resistance Archives and Museum on 29 August as part of celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the popular consultation.
