Jordy Chan, Minister of Main Works and Equipment, responsible for air, land and sea transport, is working to improve regular public transport in Tahiti, and as a result has implemented controls of an unprecedented scale, like this Thursday, July 25, 2024, at the Papeete bus station.
The aim is to ensure that the companies responsible for operating the above networks comply with all their contractual obligations.
This involves verifying that the passenger has the necessary information to use the service (full information on stops and in case of changes in operating conditions, such as total or partial impossibility of the service); that the bus does not exceed the maximum age limit established by the state (14 years), that the bus has an appropriate appearance and information (name of the operating route), that the bus is not broken and has fully functional air conditioning (for those who have it). Finally, bus drivers must hold a professional qualification certificate, wear appropriate clothing and act respectfully (for example, not smoking).
73 violations were found and service providers will be required to find solutions or face possible financial penalties.
This latest intervention follows two previous inspections that have led to the country inviting the aforementioned companies to update the information displayed on nearly 219 bus stop pillars and replace buses that are more than 14 years old.
