In response to a recent post that has been widely circulated on social media platforms, the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) issued the following statement:
Allegations of health and safety violations:
The PHA acknowledged there were concerns that the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) had breached Section 321C of the Work Health and Safety Act. Specifically, there were claims of pest infestations in the mortuary and cafeteria, exposure to hazardous chemicals and issues with the air conditioning system.
Management Response:
1. Restaurant Closures and Pest Infestations:
The decision to temporarily close PMH Restaurants was in response to major infrastructure repairs and renovations that had been delayed for more than five years. While temporary measures were taken to maintain operations, the relocation of staff was a priority to ensure the safety of patients, staff and visitors. Contrary to what has been claimed, there is no evidence of contact or cross contamination leading to foodborne illness.
2. Chemical exposure accidents:
Upon receiving reports of a strong diesel odor within the hospital, a comprehensive investigation was quickly initiated. The source of the odor was traced to a leaking pipe, followed by immediate isolation of the affected area, remedial work and thorough cleaning to eliminate the odor and address any potential hazards. All staff were educated, and staff with respiratory issues were referred to the PMH Employee Health Center for prompt medical evaluation and appropriate treatment.
