Statement: The Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) wishes to inform that the Rand Laboratory (Mortuary) has resumed normal operations on Friday, July 19, 2024, after being briefly closed last week due to a diesel leak in the isolated decommissioned boiler room.
As an organization committed to the safety and well-being of our patients and staff, PHA took immediate action to address the diesel spill that occurred on Saturday, July 20th.
We are working closely with relevant stakeholders and industry partners to quickly take all necessary steps to ensure this issue is resolved quickly.
Mr. Anthony Ryan, Public Analyst II at the Ministry of Health, commended the management team for taking proactive steps to remedy the leak. Employees affected by the incident were advised to seek medical assistance from the Employee Health Services Centre to ensure their health.
Clean-up measures for the affected area include collecting and absorbing the leaked diesel fuel, as well as repeated treatment with industrial solvents and degreasers.
With the assistance of Mr. Ryan, we are continuously monitoring air quality to ensure a safe, odor-free environment for all.
Although initial cleanup procedures were implemented in accordance with the recommendations of environmental experts, staff expressed concerns about a persistent odor. A follow-up inspection found only a faint residual odor. To address these concerns, PHA worked with Rubis to conduct a final cleanup while cleaning the site’s drains.
