This Friday, USTKE set up a food bank. 150 packages were distributed at the union headquarters. This was for members who lost their jobs due to the destruction of their businesses during the riots. “About a hundred members are affected. We expect 150 employees and we have identified two unions first, the Industrial Union and the Business Union.” Mélanie Atapo, president of the union, explains.
The parcels mainly contained basic necessities: oil, rice, pasta, toilet paper and flour. Each parcel was worth 12,000 francs. In addition, there was a 5,000 franc fuel voucher.
Unions are solely responsible for financing their solidarity actions. “Our federation is also involved, and in addition to injecting $2 million to fund the food bank, it also brought a certain amount of food quota.” Melanie Atapo concluded.
Two new releases are planned: one in September and the other in October. Meanwhile, from August 15 to 18, USTKE is organizing a bingo game to finance its solidarity actions.
