Recall that last week hundreds of Gambians, mostly youths, marched in Banjul to protest against two controversial bills.

A letter signed by the Secretary of the National Assembly, Momodou A. Sise, and addressed to the Chairman of Concerned Citizens, obtained by The Point, reads: “I write on behalf of the National Assembly to confirm receipt of your petition with the above title and the statements contained therein, which were submitted through the Speaker of the National Assembly on Monday, July 8, 2024.”

“After due consideration of the contents of the petition by the various factions of the leadership of the Congress, I am directed to invite you and a representative of not more than seven persons to meet with the said leadership of the Congress for dialogue and discussion on the subject.”

Responding to the letter, the group’s president, Momodou Lamin Manjang, said: “We have received the letter and we plan to meet with the leadership of Congress. However, I want to make it clear that our position remains clear. We want the demands to be met, especially the rejection of these bills.”

“As long as the bill is not passed by the legislators, we can wait. However, we will give them a timeline to meet our demands. If they cannot meet our demands, we are ready to take to the streets as long as the state supports us,” he posited.
