New recognition for Tunisian mathematical research: the Royal Society of Great Britain has just awarded the “Royal Society Pfizer Prize 2024” to Professor Ali Baklouti of the University of Sfax. This award, known as the “Royal Society Africa Prize”, rewards scientific researchers who have made innovative and significant contributions in their field of research. This new recognition comes two years after Professor Baklouti was nominated by the African Mathematical Union as the best mathematician on the African continent for the period 2022-2026 (AMU-PACOM 2022 Prize and Medal, Mathematics Category A). The President of the Republic awarded him the merit on August 15, 2024 at the Carthage Palace. The announcement of the award of the prize to Professor Ali Baklouti, announced today by the British media on August 28, 2024, constitutes a cause of great honor for Tunisia and once again confirms the excellence of mathematical research in our country.
Graduated from the University of Metz in France in 1995, Ali Bakrouti joined the University of Tunis very early and quickly climbed to the top of Tunisian academic and scientific life. In December 2016, he was appointed an active member of the “Tunisian Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts: Beit Elhikma”. Highly recognized by his peers, he was elected Vice-President of the University of Sfax (December 2020-July 2024) and President of the Tunisian Mathematical Society for two consecutive terms (April 2016-March 2019 and April 2019-March 2023).
Professor Ali Baklouti also heads the “Applied Mathematics and Harmonic Analysis” research laboratory at the University of Sfax. He is the Deputy Director of the Mediterranean Institute of Mathematical Sciences and an expert member in research and education at the Erasmus+ Tunisia Office designated by the Ministry of Higher Education and the European Commission.
He is the author of numerous mathematical works, including two reference books in the field. His research focuses on non-commutative harmonic analysis, representation theory, and geometric deformation problems, and has made many major breakthroughs. He is a founding member and co-editor of the Tunisian Journal of Mathematics published by MSP in the United States, and the editor-in-chief of Advances in Pure and Applied Mathematics published by ISTE in the United Kingdom. ).
The Royal Academy of Sciences is officially called the Royal Society of London, which is the equivalent of the French Academy of Sciences. It was founded in London in 1660 to promote science. The Pfizer Prize has been awarded annually since 2006.
