June 13, 2024 – The new Minister of the Prison Administration, Julio García Zerpa, begins comprehensive measures in all prisons across the country. “We immediately begin to focus today on those who are deprived of their liberty,” Zerpa wrote on his X social network account on Tuesday.
“We started this deployment through the Carabobo and Lara prison centers, where we also responded to complaints from families,” said Zepa, who was named head of the department in charge of Venezuela’s prisons last Tuesday.
President Nicolás Maduro entrusted Zerpa with “ending corruption in the prison system and establishing a new system of governance”. During an appearance on “Suddenly with Maduro”, the head of state criticized the charges against people deprived of their liberty in prison facilities.
“It is impossible for a convicted person or a detainee to be charged for taking him to the bathroom, that is impossible, if they have to transfer him, there will be procedural delays because he has no money to transfer him, bandits, corrupt elements,” Maduro said.
According to Minister Zerpa’s social network, last Tuesday the Prison Service published a notice informing that they were providing relatives of prisoners with the email Denunciafamilia@mppsp.gob.ve.
Zerpa’s appointment came amid protests by inmates in several prisons in the country.
