Byangsa, one of 13 remote villages in Lungnak without electricity, said he was satisfied with the installation of a small 33-kilowatt system.
The village is 3,400 meters above sea level and it takes eight days to walk from Tongxingna Highway.
In the past, residents of Byangsa village lived on gas cylinders except for lighting candles and replacing mobile phones as needed, and other items such as cutlery and gas cylinders.
The newly installed solar power plant will generate 40 megawatts of electricity per year, benefiting 11 households living in the highlands.
The project was installed by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources at a total cost of Rs21.1 million.
Padma Gragspa, MP for Khamad Lungnak constituency, said solar energy is said to have helped people in the northern part of the country improve their quality of life, which has had a positive impact on the environment for most people. Yak dung and wood will now be used and I am not going to fight.
He said the present government had set up a medium-sized power plant at Lonak in the 13th Plan, “which is a good idea to start afresh,” he said.
The successful use of solar energy will allow the people of Lonaque to use affordable solar energy from next year.
Padma Bhugpa said that with the help of the Bhutan Trust Fund, Lonak’s village was rebuilt, and “within three years, we were using solar energy,” he said.
The Ministry of Energy will continue to provide installation services to villages without electricity connections and is allocating a budget.
For the sake of cooperation, local communities are also involved in these projects and they also receive a monthly energy consumption fee for sustainable development.
The Bhutanese government has allocated funds for installing solar energy in Lonak.
