Water polo players from Primorye will play against Croatian clubs outside Kotor in the regional Super League next season, club president Sinisa Kovacevic announced.
Problems arose after Croatian clubs and the national team refused to play at the Zoran Djimi Gopcevic swimming pool in Kotor. For the Croatian side, the name of the pool is controversial.
That is, the swimming pool in Kotor is named after Zoran Gopčević, a famous water polo player from Primorye, who was accused by Croatia of war crimes in the Morinj camp. We remind you that the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has issued a recommendation that Croatian clubs and the Croatian national team not play in Kotor.
“VPK Primorac, led by President Sinisa Kovacevic, has found a solution to conduct the Premier League in the coming season after negotiations with the Croatian Water Polo Association without help from the state and municipalities,” Primorac announced.
Primorac will therefore be the host in one of the Montenegrin pools outside Kotor, while the Croatian representative will play against Primorac at a neutral venue in Croatia.
“I think this is the biggest goal we can achieve. We found a sporting solution and in conversation with the chairman of the board of the regional water polo federation and vice chairman of HVS Peric Bukić, we agreed to play five matches with Croatian clubs. Primorac will play in a neutral pool in Montenegro and Croatian representatives will also play in a neutral pool in Croatia,” Kovacevic said.
“This compromise is a solution for next season, but I hope that the State of Montenegro and the Republic of Croatia will be able to resolve this issue so that Primorac will no longer be a victim of politics, because we want to play sports,” Kovacevic said.
The regional league will begin on September 21st.
