Janata Dal leader and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena will lead a new political alliance of parties and groups supporting President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming presidential election.
Sources said a decision has already been taken in this regard.
The breakaway parties from the Sri Lanka People’s Front (SLPP), the MEP group led by Prime Minister Gunawardena, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) group led by Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, the breakaway group from the People’s Front (SJB), the Sri Lanka People’s Party, the Eelam People’s Democratic Party and some other political parties have expressed their support to the President, who will contest as an independent candidate in the upcoming presidential election.
Political sources also revealed that since several other parties and groups will also support the president in the coming days, this new alliance will be unveiled as soon as possible with the participation of the leaders of all these parties and groups.
