Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao was a keynote speaker at the Global Leaders Forum as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The event, themed “Charting a New Course for Development in a Changing World”, was held in Geneva, Switzerland from June 12 to 14. 
On behalf of the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta The Prime Minister said “Since its founding in 1964, UNCTAD has been at the forefront of economic and geopolitical change, fighting for a fairer economic system”.
He also stressed that “UNCTAD’s 60th anniversary provides an opportunity to discuss new approaches to today’s challenges”, “a world where conflict and unrest are on the rise and international law is applied selectively in developed countries.” Furthermore, we face “a climate emergency caused by industrialized countries, but with a greater impact on developing countries”. At the same time, “our global economy is exacerbating extreme inequalities.” 
The Heads of Government stressed the importance of inclusive development approaches led by countries themselves and highlighted the creation of the G7, a group of vulnerable countries to share experiences and defend a common voice on the international stage.
Xanana Gusmão highlighted Timor-Leste’s recent accession to the World Trade Organization, which “will help the country’s integration into the global economy”. He also praised UNCTAD’s strategy to support small island developing States, “which provides a framework for sustainable development, economic diversification and resilience building”. 
The Prime Minister called on “the United Nations and UNCTAD to explore better ways to provide support and assistance to open the door to peace and development for these fragile countries”, and stressed that UNCTAD needed “the necessary political support to play its role in outlining a new model for international development”.
