The queer era has arrived and the programme is more diverse than ever. Helga Haraldsdóttir, who leads a team of seven volunteers on the Hinsegin daga board, says the festival is the result of a whole year of planning. With 82 events this year, there is plenty to choose from. Helga was a guest of Morgunútvarðin, where she spoke about the programme.
Today’s agenda includes the so-called Rainbow Conference. Visitors have the opportunity to learn about queer-related issues and participate in or listen to discussions about issues that are burning in the queer community. Marginalized groups in society are given the space to look at themselves from the inside out. The program takes place in Izno, which is now the pride center. There are many activities throughout the week, and there are rainbow merchandise for sale.
Helga is particularly excited about the discussion of the so-called politically motivated pinkwashing, led by Ugla Stefanía. There will also be a great show on Friday. “It’s the biggest drag show in Iceland. Then foreign queens come, and besides, we can’t forget the best of the Icelandic drag scene,” she says.
Icelandic Drag Queens have a lot to do this week. “There will also be drag bingo and drag bran and all sorts of activities. It’s enough to keep the drag queens running from one place to another in their high heels.”
The parade is, of course, the highlight of Gay Day. In it, lesbian, gay, bisexual and pansexual, transgender, intersex and other queer people, together with their families and friends, affirm their existence and remember their struggles. The parade is both a march of demands for equality, awareness and the end of discrimination for the queer community, and a platform to celebrate the achievements of the struggle.
Departure from Hallgrímskirkja at 14:00 on time with a list of 42 items. “It will be a hell turnip with a different message. It will be glorious,” said Helga.
The festival program will then take place at Hljómskálagard, where artists such as Margréti Rán úr Vök, Bashar Murad and Bjarni Snæbjörnsson will perform. In addition, the new President of the Republic, Halla Thomasdottir, will address the guests. “It’s great to hear from her on her first day in office,” says Helga.
The slogan for this year’s Queer Day is “Pride is Power.” “We want to emphasize that of course there are people who oppose us, but we stand firm, hold our heads high and say we are who we are. Let’s find strength in pride.”

This time the song “Hinsegin daga” is sung by the musician RÁN (also known as Margret Rán) and accompanied by Páll Óskar. The song is called “Gleðivíma” and will be played all over the country in the coming days.
