The four literary works recently selected for the final stage of the second edition of the Mia Couto Literary Award are “The Blues of Quasala” by Jessimus Kacinda, “Estoria brought by Ventanya” by Adelino Albano Luis, “Da asa do vento”, “The dust of fire”, by Rungo Novela, and “The hips of the gay leader”, by Sérgio Raimundo.

The annual award, which includes categories for poetry and prose, was launched in June 2023 in the city of Beira, Sofala province, as part of the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the Capo de Mozambique (CdM), an initiative of the Beira Port concessionaire, in partnership with the Kulumba Literary Association.

The winners will be announced on September 12 in Beira, with the second edition of the jury consisting of: Lourenço do Rosário (President), Teresa Manjate, Marcelo Panguana, Ondjakie of Angola and Tania Macedo of Brazil. This initiative aims to stimulate high-quality literary production in the country, selecting the best works published each year.

The winner of each prize category will receive a prize of 400,000 meticais. For the prose category, in even-numbered years, the prize will be awarded to the best short story and in odd-numbered years, the prize will be awarded to the best novel.

Thus, in 2024, the Prize will recognize a collection of short stories. It is worth highlighting that last year, in the first edition in which works published in 2021 and 2022 received special recognition, Bento Baloi won the Prize in the Romance Category (Fiction Prose) for the work “No Verso da Cicatriz” and Belmiro Mouzinho for the poem “Pétalas Negras ou a Sombra do Inanimado”.
