Santo Domingo. – President Luis Abinader said this Monday that the date and details of his constitutional reform project will be announced soon. He added that other reform proposals will be presented after August 16.
The President said at the Raseemanal meeting that other reforms and other bills will be introduced after the start of his second term in government.
“As we have said on other occasions, constitutional reform will be the first reform we will announce, including some details, and the other reforms will come gradually because some parts will also affect other parts,” he said.
He will ask members of Congress to work more efficiently
The head of state also insisted that he will ask the new Congress to be more productive. “What I can tell you is that in the next Congress, which will convene on August 16, we will ask you to remain productive because we will bring you important reforms and many bills to modernize the different sectors of Dominican public life”.
Likewise, he reiterated his hope that reforms in the country, including constitutional reform, would be carried out by consensus.
“I hope we can reach a consensus. The fact that we have a supermajority in Congress will not constrain us and will not prevent us from making sure that everything we do that affects the country has the agreement of as many sectors as possible,” he said.
Constitutional reform guarantees other
Abinad added: “I am a little ahead of myself on the reform issue, why do we raise the issue of constitutional reform first? Because that will guarantee all other reforms. If you don’t have political and democratic stability, you can do all other reforms but it will affect your development.
In addition to constitutional reform, the government has proposed reforms to social security, labor laws, the Ministry of the Interior and police laws, among others.
