In the upcoming presidential election, voters should think carefully about their future
The ideology promoted by political parties like the JVP has hampered rapid economic growth
A new, fair approach is needed to address the economic crisis

He urged citizens to think carefully about their future as they make their decision in the upcoming presidential election.
The president made the comments during a recent “Ask Lanier” appearance and responded to questions posed on social media.
He also responded to criticism from some quarters that it was inaccurate to claim that successive leaders had not contributed anything to the country’s development over the past 75 years. He pointed out that ideologies like the JVP, which advocated domestic economy, hampered rapid economic growth.
The President stressed that a new approach that transcends partisan differences is needed to overcome the economic crisis facing the country, noting that a significant number of people support his efforts, which is why he decided to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming presidential elections.
During the discussion, the two sides conducted the following questions and answers:
askMr. President, you chose the “gas tank” as the symbol of the presidential election this time. Why did you choose the “gas tank” instead of the “elephant”?
one: I have decided to run in the upcoming presidential election as an independent candidate. Today, there is a strong feeling that political parties should be abandoned. To do this, we need to rethink our political approach. Since I have worked with several groups, I have decided to run as an independent. An independent candidate can choose any symbol, and I think the gas can is the most suitable symbol at this time.
ask: Some people believe you can strengthen the economy, but some are hesitant because of your relationship with the Rajapaksas and the Sri Lanka People’s Front (SLPP). What do you want to say to them?
one: Which Rajapaksa are you referring to? There were three candidates named Rajapaksa: Lashman Namal Rajapaksa, Namal Rajapaksa and Wijayadasa Rajapaksa. But none of them are with us. The important question is whether the situation is better today than in July 2022. I have the support of the Sri Lanka People’s Party to lead the government. Without their support, there would be no fuel or fertilizer. This phase of governance is now complete. We are coming to the elections, they will go their way and I will go mine. There are hundreds of thousands of Rajapaksas in Sri Lanka, some of whom might have voted for me. However, the party chose to fight the presidential election alone, and so did we.
ask: Mr President, despite our resources like the Purmodai mineral sands deposits, Trincomalee Port and Hambantota Airport, we are in debt to the world. Political parties blame the rulers of the past 75 years for failing to fully utilise these resources.
one: It is not true to say that nothing has been done in the past 75 years. We built all the hydroelectric plants, airports, and established a free education system. Who can say that nothing has been done? Many people think that relying on the domestic economy alone is enough. But we need to open up to the world. We have not been able to achieve rapid development because parties like the People’s Liberation Front insisted on a purely domestic focus. No country has succeeded in this way. If you look at successful countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong, you will understand the need to look outward. So we need to learn from these countries.
ask:Mr. President, you have introduced laws to prevent all forms of corruption. However, the public believes that this legal system only catches petty criminals, while major thefts go unpunished.
one: Can you name some petty criminals that have been caught using this method? It’s not just the small fish that are targeted, it’s the sharks as well. When we came to power in 2015, several groups were set up to deal with corruption. There was a special unit under the presidency, the Criminal Investigation Department of the Police Department was also there, another separate police unit was set up for this purpose, and there was also the Bribery Commission.
The Attorney General’s Office has also established an Anti-Corruption Secretariat. Despite these efforts, legal challenges have arisen in certain areas, which is why we have implemented this new system.
If an individual earns income illegally, action will be taken against them. It is also crucial to train the necessary personnel to carry out these tasks effectively.
ask:Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more and more popular in various fields. What impact do you think AI will have on politics and economy in the future?
one: We need to explore how AI can be integrated into our society and economy. It has the potential to become not only a global tool, but also an international weapon. Countries around the world are still deliberating on this and are developing laws to address it. This will be a major topic of discussion over the next decade. AI has the power to create as well as the power to destroy.
At present, we do not have a legal framework in place that outlines the benefits of AI and how it should be regulated. It is important to recognise that this is a highly modern and evolving concept. All of these developments take time. While I recognise the importance of AI, it must be accompanied by appropriate controls.
ask:What plans do you have to make public services more efficient?
one: Over the past 10 years, we have implemented several measures to improve public services. Although there is a surplus of employees, simply asking them to leave could lead to serious social unrest as many lack alternative sources of income. They may end up protesting, as happened in Bangladesh. So we need to handle this situation carefully. Employees spend their wages instead of saving them, which contributes to the economy. We must think about how to address this issue while protecting their future.
Our goal is to modernize the public service. Many grassroots staff need new programs and training. While the efficiency of the public service is often tested in emergencies such as floods, it is important to recognize its successes and shortcomings.
