MOGADISHU (HOL) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamed has reiterated that Al-Shabaab has been fomenting clan clashes and creating discord in several parts of the country.
Speaking at the opening of the fifth session of the lower house of the Somali Parliament on Saturday, President Mahmoud stressed that the group’s aim is to disrupt the second phase of the government’s operation to liberate areas still under the control of the Al-Shabaab.
“This is part of the terrorists’ plan, they want to turn our people against each other to divert attention from the country’s liberation. This will not happen. We are making our country peaceful and expelling the Kharijites from the country,” President Hassan Sheikh said.
The President praised the efforts of the regional government and traditional elders to end the inter-communal conflict in the Mudug region, which has left nearly 30 people dead and 50 injured.
Recently, inter-tribal clashes have occurred in the Galgaduud, Luk, Mudug and Lower Shabelle regions. The leader of Jubbaland State, Ahmed Mohammed Islam Madobe, on Friday called on two rival tribal militias in the Luk region of Gedo State to immediately cease hostilities.
