CARACAS (AP) — Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced Thursday that he is banning Venezuela from participating in presidential elections for 10 days.
An Associated Press reporter confirmed that during the evening, two private phone operators in Caracas and state-owned Movilnet stopped loading the posts.
“Elon Musk is the owner of X and has violated all the rules of the social network itself,” Maduro said in a speech after the march by grassroots groups from his ruling party.
Maduro also said he had “signed an executive act based on a proposal from the National Telecommunications Commission, CONATEL, which has decided to remove the social network,” but the president did not reveal details of the Venezuelan telecommunications regulator’s procedures. “It will take 10 days to provide the funds and 10 days to take the final measures,” Maduro added.
X News Zone did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking comment on the Venezuelan authorities’ decision.
“X is absent for 10 days! Elon Musk go away!” Maduro shouted to the public.
The president’s decision came after Maduro and Musk, with both Maduro and his opponent declaring themselves the winners.
Musk used the social network to accuse the self-proclaimed socialist leader of “major election fraud.”
“Shame on dictator Maduro,” Musk said in a post on Monday.
In response to the comments, Maduro attacked Musk and said he was a “big enemy of peace in Venezuela.”
Since the presidential election, the president has also expressed the need to “regulate” social networks in the country.
Maduro also accused his opponents of using the app to threaten the families of his followers and political, military and police allies and to create anxiety among Venezuelans.
Maduro was seeking re-election to a third six-year term and was declared the winner by the National Electoral Council (CNE), a university body with a pro-government majority.
The opposition claims to have at least 84% of the polling station records, which, in its defense, give its opponent González victory.
