Uncovering the truth behind public promises

Do not mislead the public or harm the country

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has challenged Sajith Premadasa and Anura Kumara Dissanayake to participate in an open virtual discussion with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

This will enable the nation as a whole to assess the authenticity of their public commitments and statements.

The President also stressed that amending the agreement with the IMF is not feasible. He stressed that such a change could lead to another economic collapse, while the misleading promises of Premadasa and Dissanayake to reduce prices and taxes could worsen the situation in the country. He stressed the need to prevent such deceptions.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that while he wanted lower commodity prices and reduced taxes, these actions could only be achieved by strengthening the rupee and adhering to the agreement with the IMF. He also urged Sajith Premadasa and Anurad Kumara Dissanayake to immediately come up with any alternative solutions and seek their input in discussions with the IMF.

The President made the remarks yesterday (25th) at a special convention of the United National Party (UNP) held at the party headquarters ‘Sirikotha’ in Pittakot.

President Wickremesinghe recalled UNP founder Senanayake and said he was committed to preserving Sri Lanka’s national identity. Following the example of Dudley Senanayake, JR Jayewardene and Ranasinghe Premadasa, President Wickremesinghe said he was inspired by working with these legends to put the welfare of the country first.

A large number of UNP members attended the special congress to express their support for President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who has successfully led the country through the economic crisis of 2022. They supported him to contest the upcoming presidential election on September 21 as an independent candidate with the aim of moving Sri Lanka towards development. UNP Secretary General Palitha Range Bandara presented the resolution to the congress expressing the party’s agreement. UNP National Organizer Sagala Ratnayaka confirmed the resolution; it was passed unanimously with all participants raising their hands in agreement. In addition, the President also inaugurated the newly renovated party headquarters in Sirikotha.
